Anthropic Launches Claude Duet: A Business-First AI Agent for Professionals

Anthropic's new Claude Duet targets small businesses and professionals with automated task management, distinguishing itself from personal assistant rivals by focusing on background work and data integration.

The artificial intelligence landscape is currently saturated with productivity tools, as new assistants launch with increasing frequency. Against this backdrop of crowded competition, Anthropic has introduced Claude Duet, an application designed to carve out a specific niche in the rapidly evolving agent market.

The company positions Duet not as a general-purpose personal assistant, but as a specialized tool for professionals and small businesses. By targeting this demographic, Anthropic aims to compete directly with established players like Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. The core value proposition lies in automating and managing complex tasks rather than handling simple daily errands.

Anthropic explicitly draws a line between Duet and personal agents such as Instinct, noting that the new app is not optimized for booking tickets or performing routine chores. Furthermore, it does not offer real-time visual feedback of its browser activities. Instead, the agent focuses on higher-level productivity functions, such as generating daily briefings, constructing custom dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on user data.

Operationally, Duet utilizes its own virtual machine to execute tasks in the background, allowing users to continue their work uninterrupted. The agent will only interrupt the user when specific approval is required for a step. This proactive approach involves monitoring ongoing tasks and delivering recommendations as they become relevant, a feature Anthropic says distinguishes it from passive assistants.

The technical foundation of Duet is the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which enables the agent to connect to over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive integration capability allows Duet to interact with a wide array of professional tools. Additionally, the agent can facilitate online purchases through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, though sensitive financial steps require explicit user consent.

To address security concerns inherent in autonomous agents, Anthropic has introduced a new classifier that scans every message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the system is configured to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification. While Duet can handle payments, it is restricted from trading securities or transferring funds between different accounts, a limitation intended to reduce risk.

The launch of Claude Duet reflects a broader industry shift from simple conversational assistants to agents capable of acting on behalf of users. Many competitors, including Meta and OpenAI, have recently released business-oriented versions of their assistants to capitalize on this trend. For now, Duet is available in a research preview for Pro and Max customers on iOS, Android, and the web via Claude.ai, with access currently managed through a waitlist.
